Meet Melvin Chung: From Team Malaysia to Coaching Sabah's Next Racers

Coach Melvin Chung presenting a sim racing masterclass

Ask most people how to get faster in sim racing and you'll hear the same answer: more seat time. Ask Melvin Chung and you'll get a different one: deliberate seat time.

"Everyone practices," he says at his academy masterclasses. "Very few practice the right thing."

The credentials

Melvin's racing resume is the kind Sabah's esports scene rarely sees up close:

  • Former Team Malaysia sim racing representative, competing at the international level
  • SUKMA 2024 esports coach, preparing state athletes for Malaysia's biggest multi-sport stage

That combination matters. Plenty of fast drivers can't teach; plenty of teachers were never fast. The academy exists in the overlap.

What he actually teaches

The AKG Sim Racing Academy curriculum is built on a simple belief: consistency beats heroics.

  1. Braking discipline. Beginners lose more time in braking zones than anywhere else. Fixing brake points is the fastest single improvement most students ever make.
  2. The racing line, felt not memorized. Students learn why the line is the line, so it transfers to every new track.
  3. Consistency metrics. Telemetry review across a 10-lap stint. The goal isn't one great lap; it's ten laps within a few tenths.
  4. Race craft. Defending, overtaking, tire management and the psychology of not throwing away P2 chasing P1.

Who the academy is for

  • Beginners who want to skip six months of bad habits (from RM250 per session, all equipment provided)
  • Competitive racers preparing for leagues like our own Aneekey x Joshima championship
  • Schools and talent programs building structured esports pathways, the same development model SUKMA uses

Sessions run 1-on-1 or in small groups on professional simulators. You just show up; the rigs are ours.

The bigger picture

Sabah's sim racing scene is growing fast: community leagues, mall time attacks, state-level events. The academy is how that scene gets a proper talent pipeline instead of raw enthusiasm alone.

Melvin's students have a habit of appearing on local leaderboards a few months in. The next name on the podium could be yours.
